I Can’t Not Eat Fruit!!!

The other day I told you all I was going to stick to Sarah Wilson’s Sugar Detox plan, but I have already caved – I ate some fruit!! 😮

Now I know this may not seem like a big deal as fruit is still healthy, but it contains so much fructose that to really detox your body you should avoid it too. However I am really struggling, I used to have a banana on toast or something alike for breakfast and now I do not know what to eat. I had scrambled eggs and sausage the other day, only 0.4g of sugar per sausage that’s good right?! But no, I do not want to start my day with such a heavy meal! I really feel at loss with 0 fruit! So although this goes against the detox plan, yes I know shock horror I am breaking rules again and diverging from plans, I will allow myself a little fruit, 1 banana for breakfast and some berries to snack on. Berries are lower in sugar than most fruits especially raspberries and blackberries.

So I on that note here’s what I had for breakfast this morning: Quark, Yoghurt, Blueberries, Oats, Chia seeds and Flax seeds with a delicious freshly brewed filter coffee.

The Art of Feeling Full

Learning how to eat and listen to your body, something I’ve never paid attention to but should have. I am a foodie through and through and if there’s something yummy to eat I will often power through even when feeling full. This is something I need to change. Here are two supposed tips that I’ve known about for years, on how to help reduce the amount I eat in the first place and feel full faster, but have never put to practice. I do not know how true the science behind these ideas is, but logically they seem to make sense to me. Let’s see if I can start abiding to these two tips and how much of a difference they make.

– Drink a glass of water/tea around 30mins before your meal (this will fill your stomach a little and leave you feeling less hungry before you have even started your meal resulting in less consumed afterwards)

– Eat slowly and chew properly (perhaps try to chew at least 30-40 times before swallowing – this is just a number I will aim for myself btw, not a scientific proven ideal or anything)

Here is also an article I found on the importance of chewing properly: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/07/31/chewing-foods.aspx

Sarah Wilson’s Sugar Free Detox

After serious overindulging in Amsterdam and over Easter I really have to give breaking my sugar addiction another serious go! I have read Sarah’s sugar detox book and in her 8 week plan all suagr including fruit is cut out. When I stuck to the less sugar in November it was doable, but I’ve not been able to get back on track since Xmas and now, this I will struggle with, truely! I love my fruit and not being able to snack on fruit is going to be real difficult! Now it’s just veg, I mean I’ve grown to like celery, but I can’t just snack on celery haha.

Anyway, I’m sat in bed watching Extreme Makeover Weight-loss edition to get me in the right mind frame for tomorrow morning. It is soo inspirational! If you’ve never seen it I urge you to watch an episode; the transformations are amazing and I hope to God that I will have such an striking transformation one day, and the journey begins tomorrow! No more excuses, no more going back!!! If the can do it, so can I!!

No sugar and back to my gym routine will get me the results I need! So lets do this!!!

Portion Sizes & Listening to your Stomach

This past few weeks (before Amsterdam) have become somewhat of an eye opener to me. As I mentioned before, I have really started to enjoy eating lots of healthy veg and if there’s non in the cupboards or fridge I’m like ‘Oh no!’ I have come to love a large veg helping for my main meal and even quite enjoy snacking on celery now. I am definitely more aware of my ‘I’m full’ signals and feel like I am more easily satisfied (apart from when I’m occasionally in a careless bingy mood where I’ll ignore the signals).

However, two problem still remain – one: portion sizes and two: I hate wasting food; so not a good combination as you can guess. I cook too much and then feel like I have to eat it because I’ve paid for it and I don’t want to waste my money by chucking what I can’t eat in the bin. Thus I over eat, so even though I’ve mostly been eating really healthy, it doesn’t feel like the weight’s shifting as I mindlessly overeat and disregard my ‘I’m full’ signal because I don’t want to waste food! Same with snacks, well in some cases anyhow. If I’ve prepared them for the day ahead I sometimes feel like I need to eat them all just because they’re there in front of me; other times its boredom eating and I find it’s just something to keep me occupied, even if I’m technically busy like reading or watching a movie, my hands are fidgety and need something to do to, so I eat.

In many ways I am deluding myself. I say I’ve mostly been eating really healthy, but it’s not just what you eat, quantity also makes a big difference, and I need to reduce mine!!!

Essentially I need to start actually listening to my stomach and not ignoring it. Also I am not looking at wastage in the correct manner; I mean what’s more important? A little food down the drain?? or wasting another day on my weight-loss journey? I’m just making it more difficult for myself by over cooking! Either I learn to start cooking smaller portions or I accept that if I’m full whatever’s left may need to be thrown away if it can’t be eaten the next day.

Week of the 23rd of February Review

Quick Note: It’s nearly 12am and I can’t be bothered to work out my exact sugar intake, sorry guys, so it’s just an estimate, I’ve gone over the rough 10g a day each day anyway 😦 !

Monday:

Rough Sugar Intake: 52g, Fitness: 0

I had a horrible start to the day waking up at 4am to be sick, I have no idea why, but it wasn’t nice haha. I got a bit more sleep before getting up at 7.40am for work. I had a yummy honey and sunflower seed roll with butter and a banana for breakfast at work with a cup of camomile tea. It as super filling, half a roll would have been enough really. On my break I had a third of another roll with butter and a glass of diet coke. After work I met up with a friend, who I hadn’t seen in ages, for lunch and we went to revs. I was naughty and had two cocktails, but I stuck to the healthy meal of chicken with salad.

IMG_20150301_221350

The rest of the afternoon was spent in uni till about 7pm and I had a large americano and 2 squares on 85% dark choc for a snack at 5pm ish. When I got home I waited for my flatmate to get home and then we watched the rest of The King an I (which we’d started last week) and then had a good singalong to Grease. My tea was a bowl of homemade potato and leek soup with the rest of the role from break. Later on I was naughty again though and had my last bottle of cider, stella this time, and 60g of salt and vinegar pringles.

Tuesday:

Rough Sugar Intake: 80g, Fitness: 1h cross-trainer = 573cal, weight machines = 76cal

Tuesday I had planned to go to the gym before uni but I was so tired because on monday night I only went to bed at 1.30am so I got to uni early instead and got lot’s of work done before my tutorial. Breakfast was a bacon baguette and a large americano. My tutorial went ok and for once I had a bit more to display. Lunch was a chicken fajita pasty from Greggs before my art lecture from 1pm-3pm. A chai tea latte (which I just discovered was 53g for a large?!?!! shit I did so not expect that!) was my lecture treat and another coffee at 4.30pm with 1 piece of 85% choc and 30g of crisps after a tuna crunch baguette for an early tea. Gym was from 8 ish and got home at 9.30ish.

IMG_20150225_004234

I was craving food after my long workout, but didn’t want to eat unhealthily although I was craving sugar. I had 2 crackers and a bite of cheese whilst making fried eggs on toast (no oil or anything used to fry, an 2 eggs and 2 slices of toast with butter). Wish I’d been able to say no that but hey, it wasn’t very sugary at least 🙂

Wednesday:

Sugar Intake: 13g, Fitness: 0

Wednesday began with work at 9am after a banana roll for breakfast. For lunch I had another roll at work, this time with mozzarella and lambs lettuce and a glass of diet coke.

IMG_20150301_221033

I finished work at 3pm and headed to uni to get some work done, I finished this painting and was then go to go to the gym, but my friend decided to star a paint fight with me and covered in orange paint I decided it would be easier to jus get a lift home with another friend rather than go to the gym. So I was lazy, oh and I also ate a full bag of salted popcorn, but at least that’s not much damage.

IMG_20150226_122933

Once I got home I admit I can’t even remember what I ate for dinner :/ I think it might have been another mozzarella and lambs lettuce roll.

Thursday:

Sugar Intake: 130g, Fitness: 12mins cross-trainer = 100cal, weight machines = 221cal

A good start to the day with a small session at the gym followed by breakfast of a cup of green tea with lemon and a brown roll with butter and banana. At 10.30am I went to a group crit, which had some interesting discussions going on, and drank a cup of fruit tea in those two hours. After the crit I met my friends in Cooper for our planned Cooper day, meaning a full day in Cooper researching what we might want to do after university. It began with lunch, a cream cheese bagel with salmon and rocket and chips with mayo and a bit of ketchup and a pint of die pepsi. I got underway with my researching, looking at what opportunities were available for me to go to France and learn to speak French fluently; for example I could become and Au Pair, but I’m not keen on doing that. Admittedly didn’t find much to my liking so I need to do a lot more research. Later on I had two black coffees and a salted caramel cheesecake and then later still a cheery pop (double cherry sour with hooch). At 5pm I was off to choir rehearsal which was good as usual and then I was straight back in cooper with my friends afterwards. We had given up on research at this point and just ordered dinner (curry for me) with a large glass of white wine (I had wanted a rum and coke but it’s not included in the meal deal and I couldn’t stomach a vodka lemonade so the bad sugar choice was made). Afterwards I tried this new cider (Angry Orchard) with my friend, and I’m not sure what I think, at first it was very apple juicy but then I felt it started to remind me to much of apple cider vinegar. We were then joined by two more friends and I proceeded to drink 2 bottles of Becks and one Sol before we called it a night. So this was a pretty calorific day!

IMG_20150226_212941

Friday:

Sugar Intake: 222g, (actually horrified about 100g is just the chocolate!) Fitness: 0

1 sesame roll with butter and banana split into two sittings, half before work, half at 11ish for break and both with a cup of tea. Then for lunch after work at 2.30pm I had a roll with butter, mozzarella, pesto and lambs lettuce. As my friend and I finished work at the same time we decided to have a round of cheeky cocktails and went to revs where I had two Caribbean passions followed by two bottles of Sol.

IMG_20150227_150445

IMG_20150227_153852

Annoyingly I had planned to go to uni for a little after work and then do some strength building at the gym but obviously neither happened after cocktails and so I just met my friends at uni and we walked to mine for our planned friends (the tv series) drinking session. Already a bit tipsy I had a pepperoni pizza for tea and snacked on a full bag of peanut m&m’s and a full tub of Pringles throughout the night whilst drinking a double rum and diet coke, three tequila shots and a Indian summers bulmers cider. Everyone left at about 11.30 and if my consumption hadn’t been bad enough, I decided to finish the evening with a cup of tea and bar one row, a full bar of galaxy cookie crumble chocolate that one of my friends didn’t like and had left. Fuck!

Saturday:

Sugar Intake: 23g, Fitness/cal burned: 1h on the cross-trainer = 568cal, dumbles and weight machines = 236cal

Bacon sarni and a grapefruit with two cups of coffee for breakfast. I spent all morning and afternoon watching Extreme Weight Loss whilst getting three loads of washing done and ordering some new 100% natural shampoo from Funky Soaps. Oh and I ordered three books on Sugar free lifestyles/why sugar is so bad for us, I hope it will help keep me inspired! At 2pm ish I had a snakc of an organic apple and a cup of fruit tea. Then at 3pm ish I made myself a tuna mayo mozzarella salad roll and then got changed and went to the gym at 4pm ish. After the gym I came home and relaxed a little before my dad picked me up to take me to durham. My mum had made a delish chicken and leek pie with veg for tea after which dad and I sat down to watch August Rush, a lovely film, and snack on some pringles later on with a cup of fruit tea. Then I enjoyed a quick bath but had to endure the tedious process of washing my hair (I  orderd some natural liquid shampoos, I hope they’re easier than the bars im usising at the moment) before snuggling up in bed.

Sunday:

Sugar Intake: 86g, Fitness: 40 wall press ups and some squats

Breakfast was 2 slices o yummy Hefezopf with jam and butter and a pot of coffee. Until lunch at 2ish I’m afraid I still didn’t manage to resist the truffles and had 3. Lunch was out usual staff nibbles of mixed bread bites, I had 5 which is about 1 and 1/2 slices of bread.

IMG_20150301_220540

When I got back from work  made myself a quick tuna salad sandwich and then went off to the cinema with my parents to the The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which was rather good, oh and we shared some salted popcorn. Afterwards we snuggled up in the sofa for a bit and had a slice of hefezopf with jam and a hot chocolate for supper. Then I went to bed to start typing tis ridiculously long post up, and I’ve only just finished it tis morning!

Summary:

So as you can all see this week has been absolutely shit!!!! However, I have to admit I have caught the gym bug, I know  only went three times, but it made me feel really good especially when I managed 1h twice on the cross trainer. It has made me want to really get fit, I am back to Sunderland this afternoon after my dentist appointment and I already can’t wait to get to the gym! So the aim for next week, no crap!

Best Workout Ever!

IMAG1824

Just wanted to share this with you, its been 20 days since I’ve been to the gym and today I  finally went back and I went on the cross-trainer  my favourite machine. I went for about 8 mins before 4music stopped playing music so I decided to put YouTube on and play the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. I pushed myself further than I ever have before and went for a whole hour on effort level 5, burning 573 calories and stopping only three times for 1minute to have a drink. I am so happy with myself, I only did some thigh presses afterwards, but its still the longest workout I’ve done in forever even though only on one machine. It’s made me really happy, so I hope I can take that forward and continue with good workouts!

Week of the 16th of February Review

Honestly, I had debated on lying about this last week – but I did say I’d be honest so you can see my constant failures and struggles!!! I was visiting my sister in Edinburgh this weekend and when I was talking to her I came to a realisation. I was telling her how I was failing at this whole blog at the moment and how it was pissing me off; whilst explaining I came to realise the why of my failure. Like I have mentioned previously, it is not that this isn’t important to me anymore, but I have so much going on that this gets pushed to the back of my mind. Work, Uni and my social life take over my day and then I feel depleted of time or energy for other things, however, talking to my sister I started to think about what is or should be my number one priority. Yes university if important, yes I need to work to earn money and yes of course my friends are important to me, but in the end what should be my number one focus is me and this project! If I do not manage to find my own happiness and inner peace then the other things don’t matter either because my unhappiness will always come in the way. So without putting everything on the  backburner, I will however give this more of my energy from now on and if that means less of what occupied my life before then so be it! So I got back from Edinburgh earlier and sat down, put some candles and incense on, cracked open the last bottle of my favourite Bulmers cider Indian Summers (flavoured with ginger and cardamom – sooo good) and put the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack on (also superb).

IMG_20150222_214927

For some reason this soundtrack leaves me feeling very empowered and so I sit here feeling ready for whatever the world has to throw my way – I am ready for the challenge  – ready for next week !

I CAN DO THIS! I WILL DO THIS! AND I WILL SHOW YOU I CAN GET BACK ON TRACK!

But before you see next weeks triumphs prepare for another failure account from last week (I am seriously embarrassed at this point, I don’t even know anymore ahh – can’t believe I have let this shit go on for so long!!!) I also forgot to write down what I ate most of this past week so can only remember certain things, I’ll try my best:

Monday was a plain pretzel for breakfast, then some nuts and a clementine for snack at work. Lunch was probably a tuna sandwich from Greggs with a bottle of diet coke. Then a lazy few hours at uni. For tea I had organic brown fussily pasta with pesto and cheese (and the portion should have been smaller), I also went out for spontaneous drinks in the evening, a cocktail and some wine – so not good.

Tuesday was a teacake and coffee for breakfast, followed by a bacon baguette for an early lunch before my art lecture. After the lecture my friends and I went to see Fifty Shades Of Grey at the cinema and of course we got some snacks, I got cinnamon and salt popcorn, lion bars as well as sour cream and chives pretzels because I couldn’t decide what I wanted, needless to say I really pigged out and ate most!!! fuck! Anyway we really enjoyed the movie ad went for food afterwards to finish our nice afternoon off. Of course I was quite full, not that that stopped me from ordering a creamy pesto pasta with  glass of white wine, followed by a double rum and coke and a shot of tequila! (my reasoning was I was going to give up alcohol for lent-starting the next day).

Wednesday I had work again ad had plain roll for breakfast followed by a chocolate flapjack for my snack and a tuna sandwich for lunch. Then my friends and I were off to Ikea to get some things we needed for the house, we stopped for food there and I just got the kids portion of chips 3 chicken bites and peas, but I did have diet coke mixed with Fanta and some ketchup, both which are obvs full of sugar! In the evening we  were off to a pub quiz and that’s when I thought I couldn’t be bothered to give up alcohol for lent as you sort of need a pint when doing a pub quiz (bad reasons I know); in the end the pub was too busy and we went to Asda to get some snacks and alcohol on my part because I was craving a cider, and then came back to mine to watch About Time, I was super bad again and ate half a box of salt and vinegar Pringles, a full bag of peanut M&M’s and 2 slices of pepperoni pizza, all with a bottle of cider and a very large bottle of Bud. (writing this all down is making me cringe!)

Thursday was a lazy start to the day, I watched 3 movies in a row whilst getting two loads of washing done, tidying my room and packing my bags for visiting my sister and cooking some chicken and asparagus for lunch with gravy which was yumm! Then off on my train to Edinburgh I was to visit my sister. I bought a roll for tea and snacked on some sour cream and chives pretzels, left over from the cinema on Tuesday, too.

Friday I had a roll with butter and jam as well as half a pomegranate and some blueberries with a bit of yogurt for breakfast. After breakie I walked up the Craggs with my sister, which for me was quite the ordeal I tell you haha, but I’m glad I did it 🙂

IMG_20150222_221136

For lunch we went to this super cute Thai place called Ting Thai Caravan, where I had some delish pork with jasmine rice dish and shared some sweet potato chips with my sister.

IMG_20150220_124933

In the afternoon we both got some work done and the had tea, a yummy chicken salad with a roll and glass of white wine, after which we got ready and went out for a drink, I had one pint of cider and one double rum and coke.

On Saturday we had a relaxed morning starting the day with the same breakfast and a movie What To Expect When Expecting, which was quite funny. we grabbed a cheese sandwich before we went walking around Edinburgh a bit, did a bit of shopping and went to one or two art galleries for me. It was a lovely sunny day.

IMG_20150221_165720

When we got back we both got on with some work again and had a cuppa coffee and a lion bar. In the evening we had tomato spaghetti with a glass of white wine and then settled down to watch a documentary Junk Food Kids, Who’s To Blame, which was quite interesting and upsetting and resulted in my sister and me talking a bit about issues afterwards and made me want to start this week off right!

Sunday morning started with two cups of coffee and two slices of toast, one with jam, one with honey. Unlike the past few days it was a rainy morning and afternoon so we just styed inside and lazed. Lunch was a bowl of salad, a slice of melted cheese on toast and a tomato cup of soup. Then it was time for me to pack my bags and head for the train home at 5pm. I forgot how short my train back was but felt I wanted food as it would be tea time on the train, so I got a BLT sarni and some salt and vinegar crisps as well a kit Kat and a biscotti biscuit and cup of tea. As if that’s not enough once I got to Newcastle I went to Sainsbury’s and bought two rolls and bananas for breakfast the next day as I had nothing in the house, but then also decided to buy a pack of chocolate au pains, now this is typical me, I will always say get back to being good, but then the most appropriate saying I saw on a fridge magnet years ago applies perfectly, ‘my diet always starts on the same day – tomorrow’, so instead of starting straight away I binge and plan on starting the next morning.

So, excuse the length of this post, if you even read it all, you are now updated!
